Quite often we at Double Vision Photography get asked by our clients what they should wear to a Profile Shoot. Clothing choice is very important for your portraits. It is just as important as us (your photographers) getting the lighting and posing correct. As having the wrong pose can detract from the message you want give off, your clothing choice can distract from and otherwise good photo.
There are some key things you want to keep in mind when choosing clothing:
- To make your subject (you) the main focus
- To help give character to your subject
- Show status or give a sense of profession
- Wear clothing to suit your personality
- Wear clothing types/styles that flatter you
When taking your photograph, we don’t want to draw focus away from our main subject; you. You are the most important aspect of the photo. Your clothing has to look good and dress you well, but at same time not be to over-powering. Your clothing should not take away from your eyes. If the eyes in a photograph don’t ‘pop’ then you can end up with a very weak photo. People tend to see the lightest part of the photo first, the subjects eyes or face.
Don’t forget these few tips:
- Avoid wearing very light coloured clothing
- Try wear a darker tone of clothing
- Discuss background choice with your photographer
- Choose similar tones for your clothing (top and bottom)
- Don’t wear contradicting tones (Unless agreed upon beforehand)
- Try wear neutral tones
- Don’t wear clothing items that can be unflattering
We also recommend avoiding patterns and clothing that seems ‘busy’. Then again this all depends on what you want to achieve from the shoot. Most of our client do wear glasses. If you are worried about any reflections or unwanted glare in them, then stop… Don’t let this be a concern for you. We will position you correctly and set-up our lights to avoid this.
Ladies, we often photograph at eye-level or even a little higher. This is done to avoid double chins and to help flatter the subject. Taking photos from this angle cleavage is often more exposed and sometimes enhanced. You may not notice this when getting ready for the photoshoot, but you will likely see it in the final images. We do make you aware of this during the shoot, however, if you are uncomfortable with your neckline, arms ect…, we suggest wearing a scarf or longer sleeves/jacket.
Most people will often get their hair done or cut right before a Profile Shoot. We do suggest avoiding this, or at least having it done a week before we take your photos. This is not a must, we have just had some clients come in with hair they don’t like due to last minute changes.
We at Double Vision Photography will always talk to you beforehand about your profession and personality. Double Vision Photographers will discuss with you what not to wear and what to avoid. We strive to deliver the best results tailored to each of our clients and their needs.
