Here at Double Vision Photography we often get booked to photograph an event. This may range from a 1st Birthday to a full on corporate function. These events may be very different in nature and content, however, they still at the basic, exactly the same. Almost all events follow the same principles and ‘theme’.
We get asked to take photos of birthday parties all the time. These are always exciting, as it is usually for kids, and come on, kids’ parties are amazing. There is cake, balloons, a clown, more balloons and did I mention CAKE!? These kind of events are easy to shoot. Kids running around having a good time, bright colours everywhere. This all makes for great photos. I have usually found that if I get the kid smiling with their friends and the cake and some photos with the grandparents, the parents are happy. And this is all that counts, creating memories. This is the value the parents are looking for in the product that we are selling.
Apart from kiddie’s parties, now and then we get asked to photograph, adult parties. This may be a 30th, a 60th and even sometimes a bachelorette party. Now, I have said kid parties are fun, now imagine a 30 year old kid, who has one to many drinks. This is an interesting party to photograph. Everyone wants a photo taken, and everyone is crazy in their photos. Regardless of what we do as a photographer, these clients are always happy.
Some of our most common events are corporate events and award evenings. We get booked for these on a yearly basis. We have had some pretty big name clients with the likes of, Old Mutual, Rand Merchant Bank (RMB), IBM, Alisom (Vodacom) and Mini (Daytona Group). These events, as fun as they are can be stressful and require a lot of work. With events we always have to be there before the events starts so we can capture the setup and ambiance of the venue. The most common photos we take at an event are group and people photos. This may be people sitting at their tables or standing around with their buddies. But, the most important part of these evenings are the awards, after all this is why everyone is there. Award photos are tricky, there is a lot of syncing between the photographers and the MC or person handing out the awards. Everyone needs to know what is going on in order for this to work. We often arrange beforehand and know where people will stand and where they should look for the photos. If this is done, then everything will flow smoothly.
Overall, events are a lot of work, and can require a lot of post-production work, in order to get the best results for the clients. With the style that Double Vision shoots in, we try to minimize the amount of post work we need to do. Events are great fun, and it is always exciting to interact with all the different people.
